Granny’s faith did come as easy. Granddaddy’s "lack of learning" combined with a cruel childhood, taught him to work hard, keep his mouth shut and pinch pennies. His effort enabled him to buy property in Lake Charles, but the money wasn't enough. Though he loved Granny deeply, he had a dark side—one that he could not control. Adding to Granny's worry, John Wesley was fighting at school, and Charles Colin was often sullen, withdrawn.
