Soon after Uncle Hez and Aunt Leonia moved to Lake Charles, Granddaddy received a letter.

Because of the war, Uncle Hez wrote, the job market is wide open. Olin Matheson, a chemical plant on the west side of the lake, is hiring. Housing was scarce", the letter said, "but the plant pays a lot more than share cropping and on a regular basis.”

Granddaddy knew he was not likely to be drafted, so they packed what little they owned and moved to Lake Charles.
